What makes the PMP hard

It is not a quick exam: 180 questions across 240 minutes, covering predictive, agile and hybrid project management in scenario-based questions that test judgement, not just knowledge. Most candidates who fail do not fail because they lack project management knowledge, they fail because they are unfamiliar with how PMI phrases its questions and what the PMI way looks like in practice.

A lot of PMP material still in circulation is built on the old split of People 42%, Process 50%, Business Environment 8%. PMI now publishes People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%: business environment has gone from a rounding error to more than a quarter of the exam, so treating it as an afterthought leaves a quarter of the paper to chance.

About the exam

The PMP is PMI’s flagship certification and the most globally recognised project management credential. It validates expertise in leading projects using predictive, agile and hybrid approaches across virtually every industry. Candidates need three years of project management experience with a bachelor’s degree or higher (four years with an associate’s degree, five years with a high school diploma), plus 35 hours of project management education. It is valid for three years and renewed with 60 PDUs.
