What makes the CAPM hard
The CAPM is no longer a memorisation exam. Rather than asking you to recite process groups, it sets a scenario and asks what the project manager should do, and it expects you to switch between predictive, agile and business analysis thinking from one question to the next.
The ground covered is wide: project life cycles and core concepts, critical path and predictive planning, sprint ceremonies and agile roles, requirements gathering and stakeholder communication. Candidates who prepared for the older definition-style CAPM are regularly caught out by the scenario and business analysis questions.
It is also a long sitting, 150 questions in 180 minutes, so the question style needs to feel routine before exam day. Business analysis alone is 27% of the exam, second only to fundamentals at 36%.
About the exam
The CAPM certifies foundational project management knowledge across predictive, agile and business analysis approaches. It is PMI’s entry-level credential and a common stepping stone towards the PMP. It requires a secondary degree plus 23 hours of project management education, and renews every three years with 15 PDUs.
