What the Microsoft DP-600 is and who it is for
The DP-600, Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, is the exam behind the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate certification. Microsoft aims it at people with subject matter expertise in designing, creating and managing analytical assets such as semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses.
The role it describes has three parts: preparing and enriching data for analysis, securing and maintaining analytics assets, and implementing and managing semantic models. You work with business stakeholders and alongside architects, analysts, engineers and administrators. Microsoft also expects you to query and analyse data with three languages: SQL, KQL (Kusto Query Language) and DAX. That mix is what makes the exam unusual. It sits between Power BI modelling and data engineering inside Fabric.
Microsoft set 19 October 2026 as the date of an update to the English version of the exam, and the study guide lists the skills measured as of that date. Its change log marks one minor change, in the Query and analyze data objectives, and no change to Prepare data or the audience profile. Localised versions are normally updated about eight weeks after the English one.

Microsoft does not publish a question count for the DP-600. It says most of its certification exams typically contain between 40 and 60 questions, but that the number varies by exam, so pace yourself against the 100 minutes.
What is on the exam
Maintain a data analytics solution (25 to 30%). Security and governance come first: workspace-level and item-level access, row-level, column-level, object-level and file-level access control, sensitivity labels and endorsement. The second half is the development lifecycle. You configure version control for a workspace, work with Power BI Desktop projects (.pbip), build deployment pipelines, run impact analysis across lakehouses, warehouses, dataflows and semantic models, deploy models through the XMLA endpoint and manage reusable assets such as .pbit and .pbids files and shared semantic models.
Prepare data (45 to 50%). Close to half the exam. Getting data covers data connections, discovering data in the OneLake catalog and Real-Time hub, choosing between data stores and OneLake integration for Eventhouse and semantic models. Transforming data means views, functions and stored procedures, star schemas for a lakehouse or warehouse, denormalising, aggregating, merging and joining, and fixing duplicates, missing data, nulls and data types. Querying asks you to select, filter and aggregate with the Visual query editor, SQL, KQL and DAX.
Implement and manage semantic models (25 to 30%). Choosing a storage mode, star schemas for a semantic model, bridge tables and many-to-many relationships, DAX variables and functions (iterators, table filtering, windowing and information functions), calculation groups, dynamic format strings and field parameters, the large semantic model storage format and composite models. The optimisation half covers query and visual performance, DAX performance, Direct Lake with its fallback and refresh behaviour, the choice between Direct Lake on OneLake and Direct Lake on the SQL analytics endpoint, and incremental refresh.
Why people fail it
The DP-600 tests three query languages, and few candidates use all three. Power BI developers are at home in DAX but rarely write KQL against an Eventhouse. Data engineers write SQL daily but have never built a calculation group. The exam expects you to pick the right language and tool for a stated task, so a gap in any one of them costs marks.
The second cause is the weighting. Prepare data is 45 to 50% of the exam, and it is the data engineering side of Fabric: stores, ingestion, transformation and querying. Candidates who come from Power BI often spend most of their time on semantic models, which are at most 30%.
The third is Fabric-specific decisions. Lakehouse or warehouse, Import or Direct Lake, Direct Lake on OneLake or on the SQL analytics endpoint, and what happens when Direct Lake falls back. These choices are new even to experienced Power BI users, and the exam asks about them in scenario form.
A study plan that fits the exam
Six weeks suits most people who already use Power BI or Fabric. Prepare data gets three weeks because it is close to half the exam, the other two domains get a week each and the last week is timed practice.
- Week 1: getting data and choosing stores. Build a lakehouse, a warehouse and an Eventhouse in a Fabric workspace, connect sources, browse the OneLake catalog and Real-Time hub and note when each store fits. Take the free DP-600 practice questions to find your gaps.
- Week 2: transforming data. Views, functions and stored procedures, a star schema in a lakehouse and a warehouse, and cleaning duplicates, nulls and data types.
- Week 3: querying in four ways. The same select, filter and aggregate tasks in the Visual query editor, SQL, KQL and DAX. Focus on whichever language you use least.
- Week 4: semantic models. Storage modes, relationships, DAX iterators and windowing functions, calculation groups, field parameters, composite models, Direct Lake behaviour and incremental refresh.
- Week 5: security and lifecycle. Workspace and item access, row-level and object-level security, sensitivity labels, Git integration, .pbip projects, deployment pipelines and the XMLA endpoint.
- Week 6: timed runs. Take Microsoft's free Practice Assessment, then work through the questions-only copy in the DP-600 practice question pack in 100 minute blocks and read the explanation for every miss.
On exam day
You schedule through Pearson VUE. You can sit online from home or an office, proctored by webcam and microphone, or at a test centre. Microsoft says the online launch and check-in process takes about 15 minutes, so start early, and it suggests a personal computer rather than a work one. Microsoft also recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account, because exam records tied to a work or school account are lost if you leave that organisation.
You get 100 minutes, and Microsoft suggests allowing 120 minutes of seat time. Five minutes of break time is built into the exam, but the clock keeps running during a break and you cannot return to questions you saw before it. You can open Microsoft Learn in a split screen during the exam, but the timer keeps running, so save it for one detail you need to look up.
If the exam is not offered in your preferred language, you can request an extra 30 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I fail the DP-600?
You can retake it after 24 hours. After that, Microsoft requires 14 days between attempts, with no more than five attempts in the 12 months from your first. You must pay to retake the exam, so it is worth being ready the first time.
How do I keep the certification?
It lasts 12 months. You renew for free by passing a short, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month window before it expires. Passing extends it by one year from the expiry date.
Is the practice pack enough on its own?
No. It is practice, not a course. The 222 questions show how Microsoft frames Fabric decisions and explain why the wrong options are wrong, but the exam rewards time in a Fabric workspace. Use Microsoft's self-paced learning paths and your own Fabric workspace to build the skills, then use the questions to test yourself under time.
When you are ready to test yourself properly, get the DP-600 practice questions with full explanations.
