What the CompTIA Cloud+ CV0-004 is and who it is for
CompTIA Cloud+ is CompTIA’s intermediate, vendor neutral cloud certification. It validates that you can deploy, secure and manage cloud infrastructure across public, private, hybrid and multi-cloud environments. The current version is V4, series code CV0-004, launched on 24 September 2024. Compared with the previous version it expands coverage of cloud native technologies, containerisation, infrastructure as code and multi-cloud management. It is DoD 8140 approved.
It is for you if you are a systems administrator moving workloads into the cloud, a cloud engineer who wants a credential that is not tied to one provider, or you work somewhere that runs services across more than one cloud. CompTIA recommends Network+ and two to three years of hands on experience as a systems administrator or cloud engineer. If you have only ever worked with one provider’s console, expect to spend time on the concepts that sit underneath all of them.

What is on the exam
Six domains. Architecture is the largest, deployment and security are level with each other, and the last two are smaller but still worth just over a fifth of the exam between them.
Cloud architecture (23%). Service models and deployment models, shared responsibility, compute, storage and network design, high availability, scaling, and the cost and capacity trade offs behind each choice. Many questions describe a business requirement and ask which design meets it.
Deployment (19%). Getting workloads into the cloud: migration approaches, provisioning resources, containers and their orchestration, and the templates and infrastructure as code that make deployments repeatable. Expect to choose the right migration strategy for a given situation.
Operations (17%). Keeping things running once they are live: monitoring and logging, alerting, backup and restore, patching and lifecycle management, and right sizing resources as demand changes.
Security (19%). Identity and access management, encryption of data at rest and in transit, network security controls, compliance requirements and vulnerability management in a cloud setting. Questions often turn on who is responsible for a control under the service model in use.
DevOps fundamentals (10%). Source control, CI/CD pipelines, automation and the basics of infrastructure as code workflows. The smallest domain, and newer in emphasis, so it rewards candidates who have at least read a pipeline definition.
Troubleshooting (12%). Working back from a symptom to the cause: connectivity, performance, deployment failures, security misconfigurations and automation errors. This domain draws on everything else, which is why it works best at the end of your plan.
Why people fail it
Cloud+ is deliberately vendor neutral. It covers ideas that apply across AWS, Azure and GCP at the same time, because most organisations run workloads across more than one provider and need people who can operate across all of them. That breadth is exactly what makes it harder to study for than a single vendor certification. Candidates who know one provider well tend to answer with that provider’s names and defaults in mind, and the exam is asking about the general concept.
The second trap is the performance based questions. They put you inside cloud scenarios and ask you to configure, troubleshoot or secure resources. You can know the theory and still get caught out if you have not seen how CompTIA structures these scenarios, and a slow PBQ eats into a clock that is already tight at up to 90 questions in 90 minutes.
The third is spreading your time evenly. Architecture alone is 23%, and architecture, deployment and security together are 61%. DevOps is only 10%, but it is the domain candidates from traditional infrastructure backgrounds feel least sure of, so they overspend on it and leave architecture under prepared.
A study plan that fits the exam
Six weeks, in roughly the order of the domain weights, with troubleshooting and timed practice at the end because they depend on everything else.

- Week 2: deployment. Migration strategies, provisioning, containers and infrastructure as code. Work the deployment questions in the CV0-004 practice question pack and read every explanation, including the wrong options.
- Week 3: security. Identity and access, encryption, network controls, compliance and the shared responsibility split for each control.
- Week 4: operations and DevOps fundamentals. Monitoring, backup, patching and right sizing for the first half of the week, then CI/CD, source control and automation.
- Week 5: troubleshooting. Work symptom to cause across every domain, and practise the PBQs until the simulated scenarios feel routine.
- Week 6: timed runs. Use the questions only PDF for full sittings against the 90 minute limit, score yourself by domain, and spend the final days on the lowest scoring one.
On exam day
You sit CV0-004 at a Pearson VUE testing centre or online with a proctor, in English or Japanese. For online delivery, check the room and webcam rules in advance and run the system test on the computer you will use. For a centre, bring the identification your booking lists and arrive early.
With the same number of minutes as the maximum number of questions, keep a steady pace. If a PBQ is going to take a while, flag it if the interface allows and return once the multiple choice items are done. Read each scenario for its constraint, such as lowest cost, least administrative effort or highest availability, because that word usually separates two otherwise correct answers. The passing score is 750 on a scale of 900, and the scale is not a straight percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know AWS, Azure or GCP specifically?
Not in depth. Cloud+ tests the concepts that apply across providers. Experience with any one of them helps you picture the scenarios, but answer in general terms rather than in one provider’s product names.
What happens if I fail? Can I retake it?
You can, but each attempt costs the full US$399 voucher again. CompTIA publishes its retake policy, including any waiting period, on its website, so check it before you book. The practice pack is refunded if you fail, but the voucher is not, so do your timed runs before the first attempt.
Is the practice question pack enough on its own?
No. It is 314 practice questions, MCQs and PBQs, mapped to the CV0-004 objectives, with an explanation for every answer and every wrong option. It is practice: it shows you CompTIA’s framing and your weak domains. It is not a course and does not replace a study guide or hands on time in a cloud console. Use it alongside both.
