What the HashiCorp Terraform Associate (004) is and who it is for

HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate is the entry level Terraform certification. HashiCorp says you should take it if you are a cloud engineer with foundational Terraform knowledge and skills who can identify Terraform Enterprise features and distinguish them from Community edition.

There are no formal prerequisites beyond basic terminal skills and an understanding of on-premises and cloud architecture. HashiCorp recommends professional experience, but says you can also prepare by practising the objectives in a personal demo setup. HashiCorp states that provider-specific knowledge is not necessary.

The version matters. The 004 exam tests on Terraform 1.12, where the old 003 exam tested Terraform 1.3. HashiCorp set 7 January 2026 as the last day to take 003 and 8 January 2026 as the first day to take 004, the day 003 retired. HashiCorp lists four topics as new in 004, so 003 material may miss them. Check the version on anything you study from.

Two rows are missing on purpose. HashiCorp does not publish the number of questions, and it does not publish the passing score. It says the questions are true or false, multiple choice and multiple answer, and that it does not share your score percentage or the scoring threshold.

What is on the exam

HashiCorp lists eight objectives with 37 sub-objectives, but gives no percentage weights, so nobody can tell you how many questions each area gets. The count of sub-objectives is the best guide to breadth.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform. What IaC is, why the pattern helps, and how Terraform handles multi-cloud, hybrid cloud and service-agnostic workflows.

Terraform fundamentals. Installing and versioning providers, how Terraform uses them, writing configuration with more than one provider, and how Terraform uses and manages state.

Core Terraform workflow. Seven sub-objectives on the write, plan, apply cycle: init, validate, plan, apply, destroy and fmt.

Terraform configuration. The largest area, with eight sub-objectives. Resource and data blocks, cross-resource references, variables and outputs, complex types, expressions and functions, resource dependencies, custom conditions, and handling sensitive data, including secrets management with Vault.

Terraform modules. How Terraform sources modules, variable scope inside modules, using modules in configuration, and managing module versions.

Terraform state management. The local backend, state locking, configuring remote state with the backend block, and managing resource drift.

Maintain infrastructure with Terraform. Importing existing infrastructure, inspecting state from the CLI, and when and how to use verbose logging.

HCP Terraform. Creating infrastructure with HCP Terraform, its collaboration and governance features, organising workspaces and projects, and configuring the HCP Terraform integration.

Why people fail it

The first trap is studying the wrong version. HashiCorp names four topics that are new in 004: the depends_on and create_before_destroy lifecycle rules, validating configuration with custom conditions, ephemeral values and write-only arguments, and organising HCP Terraform workspaces and projects. They were not listed as exam topics for 003, so older material may skip them.

The second is state. Candidates who only ever run plan and apply on a laptop struggle with remote backends, what locking protects against, what happens when real infrastructure drifts from state, and how import brings existing resources under management.

The third is HCP Terraform. The exam expects you to separate HCP Terraform and Enterprise features from what Community edition does on its own. If you have never logged in to HCP Terraform, workspace, project and governance questions become guesswork.

Finally, the format. Multiple answer questions tell you how many answers to pick, so read each one carefully. With one hour on the clock, careless reading of flags and syntax costs marks.

A study plan that fits the exam

With no published weights, this six week plan gives the most time to the areas with the most sub-objectives, and to the new 004 topics.

  1. Week 1: IaC and fundamentals. Install Terraform, work through a get started tutorial for any provider, and learn provider requirements, the dependency lock file and why state exists. Try the free practice questions at the end of the week to find your baseline.
  2. Week 2: core workflow. Run init, validate, fmt, plan, apply and destroy until you can predict the output of each.
  3. Week 3: configuration, part one. Resource and data blocks, references, variables, outputs, complex types, expressions and functions. Write a small configuration that uses a map, a for expression and a few built-in functions.
  4. Week 4: configuration, part two. The new material: depends_on, create_before_destroy, custom conditions, ephemeral values and write-only arguments, plus sensitive data and Vault.
  5. Week 5: modules, state and maintenance. Call a registry module with a version constraint, move state to a remote backend, cause drift and fix it, import a resource, inspect state from the CLI and turn on verbose logging.
  6. Week 6: HCP Terraform and review. Sign in to HCP Terraform and set up workspaces and a project. Then work through the Terraform Associate 004 practice question pack, 167 questions with explanations, under a one hour timer, and revisit every objective where you miss questions.

On exam day

All HashiCorp certification exams are taken online with a live proctor, through Certiverse. Always start from your HashiCorp Certification Exam Portal, which is tied to your GitHub account, so make sure you can sign in to that same GitHub account on the machine you will use.

You need one unexpired, physical, government-issued photo ID, and all names on it must exactly match your portal account. Check your computer against Certiverse's system requirements and pass the network test beforehand. HashiCorp recommends Google Chrome and asks you to turn off pop-up blockers.

The room must be private and quiet, with a clear desk and nobody else present. Phones, smartwatches and headphones are not allowed, and you may use only one monitor. The exam lasts an hour, but HashiCorp suggests setting aside at least 90 minutes and launching 15 minutes early. You see pass or fail as soon as you finish, and a report on your performance by objective is available in your portal 48 hours after the exam.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I fail?

The fee does not include a free retake, so you buy another appointment. You must wait 7 days between attempts and can attempt the exam 4 times in a rolling 365 day period. Once you pass, you cannot retake it until your credentials expire, apart from the renewal window below.

Is the practice pack enough on its own?

No. It is practice, not a course. The questions and explanations show where your gaps are and get you used to the format, but this exam rewards hands-on time with Terraform and HCP Terraform. Use the pack alongside real configurations and HashiCorp's own tutorials, and start with the free Terraform Associate practice questions to see where you stand.

How do I renew it?

Credentials expire 2 years after issue. With unexpired 004 credentials you can pass the 004 exam again from 6 months before expiry, or pass the Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced exam, and either extends your expiration date. If your certification has already expired, you pass the current version to get new credentials.

I hold the 003 certification. Do I need 004?

Your 003 credentials stay valid until they expire. HashiCorp says passing 004 gives you a new, separate set of credentials with a new expiration date and does not update the date on the old ones.
