What makes the 201-450 hard
The 201-450 is not just multiple choice. LPI exams include fill-in-the-blank questions where the exact command, file path or argument has to be typed, with no options to choose from and no guessing possible.
It is also the first of two exams required to earn the full LPIC-2 certification, with 202-450 coming next, so failing here delays both. An active LPIC-1 is required to get this far, which makes this the wrong exam to cut corners on.
The weighting is unusually flat: networking configuration is the largest topic at weight 11 of 60, with the kernel, system startup and filesystems at 9 each. System maintenance is the lightest at 6. This pack has 120 practice questions for the 201-450, including every fill-in-the-blank style question.
About the exam
LPIC-2 is the Linux Professional Institute’s second professional certification level, validating advanced Linux system administration skills across any distribution. The 201-450 is the first of two required exams. The current version is 4.5, and an active LPIC-1 is required before certifying at LPIC-2. Valid for 5 years. LPI exams include fill-in-the-blank questions requiring exact command syntax, so hands-on terminal practice matters.
Exam domains
LPI publishes topic weights rather than percentages. The weights add up to 60 and map one to one onto the 60 exam questions, so a weight of 11 means roughly 11 questions.
- Capacity planning: weight 8
- Linux kernel: weight 9
- System startup: weight 9
- Filesystem and devices: weight 9
- Advanced storage device administration: weight 8
- Networking configuration: weight 11
- System maintenance: weight 6
60 questions, 90 minutes, US$200 per attempt, Pearson VUE testing centres and online proctored, valid 5 years.
