What makes the 101-500 hard
LPIC-1 requires two exams to certify, and 101-500 is the first. It covers system architecture, Linux installation and package management, GNU and Unix commands, and filesystems and devices.
Unlike most IT certification exams, LPI includes fill-in-the-blank questions where the exact command or path has to be typed with no options to guide the answer. Knowing the concept is not the same as producing the exact syntax on demand under exam conditions.
GNU and Unix commands is far and away the biggest topic, weight 26 out of 60, so roughly 26 of the 60 questions come from it alone. Candidates who spend equal time on all four topics are misreading the exam. This pack has 120 practice questions for the 101-500, including every fill-in-the-blank style question.
About the exam
LPIC-1 is the Linux Professional Institute’s first professional certification, validating foundational Linux system administration skills across any distribution. The 101-500 is the first of two required exams; passing both 101-500 and 102-500 earns the full LPIC-1 and is the required prerequisite for LPIC-2. The current version is 5.0. There are no formal prerequisites, and the certification is valid for 5 years. LPI exams include fill-in-the-blank questions requiring exact command syntax.
Exam domains
LPI publishes topic weights rather than percentages. The weights add up to 60 and map one to one onto the 60 exam questions, so a weight of 26 means roughly 26 questions.
- System architecture: weight 8
- Linux installation and package management: weight 12
- GNU and Unix commands: weight 26
- Devices, Linux filesystems, filesystem hierarchy standard: weight 14
60 questions, 90 minutes, US$200 per attempt, Pearson VUE testing centres and online proctored, valid 5 years.
