What the Anthropic CCAO-F is and who it is for
The CCAO-F is the exam behind the Claude Certified Associate - Foundations credential. Anthropic describes it as validating that you can apply Claude to business and productivity tasks with minimal guidance: using built-in platform features, spotting where Claude can improve a process, balancing quality, efficiency and cost, and knowing when to hand complex or technical work to Claude Architects and Developers.
It is written for professionals who use Claude as a productivity tool in roles such as operations, marketing, project management, education and communications. Anthropic says it is not intended for software developers who build against APIs or design agentic systems. There are no mandatory prerequisites and no coding or API experience is needed, though regular hands-on use of Claude at work is recommended.
One point to settle before you study: Anthropic says its certification exams are open to people who work at organisations in the Claude Partner Network, and you register with a company email on a domain in your organisation's partner record. A personal address will not work.

What is on the exam
Output evaluation and validation (21%). The heaviest domain. You judge whether Claude's output is accurate and complete, spot hallucinations, inconsistencies and bias, apply fact-checking, and decide when human review is needed. It also covers editing and adapting output for an audience and choosing formats such as artifacts, inline text or structured data.
Workflow integration and solution design (16%). Using Claude to analyse requirements, research, plan and optimise processes, to support solution design and iteration, and to augment or redesign existing workflows. It includes explaining Claude's value and limits to stakeholders.
Governance, risk and responsible use (15%). Telling appropriate from inappropriate use cases, applying data sensitivity, regulatory and privacy considerations, following organisational AI policy and understanding the ethical implications of AI use.
Prompting and task execution (14%). Writing effective prompts, decomposing complex requests, iterating to improve results and adapting the approach to the task type, such as analysis, research, drafting or brainstorming.
Product and model selection (12%). Choosing among product features such as Projects, research mode, chat and artifacts, telling Haiku, Sonnet and Opus apart, matching the model to cost, speed and quality needs, and managing context limits and memory, including when to restart, summarise or persist.
Configuration and knowledge management (12%). Setting up Claude Projects with instructions and knowledge sources, managing uploaded knowledge and connectors such as Google Drive and Gmail, writing system-level instructions and keeping them up to date.
Troubleshooting and optimization (10%). Diagnosing and fixing underperforming prompts or poor output, adjusting the approach from feedback and tuning workflows for efficiency.
Why people fail it
The exam rewards judgement over recall. Many items describe a realistic work situation, such as a confident summary that cites a specific section number, and ask for the most appropriate next step. Candidates who treat Claude's confidence as evidence of accuracy, or who pick the answer that sounds most helpful rather than most careful, lose marks on the heaviest domain.
The second trap is shallow product knowledge. People who use Claude daily for chat often have never configured a Project with instructions and knowledge, connected a data source or compared the model tiers against a cost and speed brief. Those objectives add up to nearly a quarter of the exam.
The third is governance. Questions about personal data, organisational policy and when to escalate usually have one answer that keeps the work moving while respecting the rule, and one tempting shortcut. Read for the policy constraint in the stem before you read the options.
A study plan that fits the exam
Five weeks is enough for most people who already use Claude at work. Output evaluation carries the most weight, so it gets its own week.
- Week 1: prompting and task execution. Rewrite a handful of real work prompts, break a complex request into steps and iterate until the output improves. Take the free CCAO-F practice questions to find your gaps.
- Week 2: output evaluation and validation. Practise checking claims against a source, spotting invented detail and deciding when a human must review the result.
- Week 3: product, model and configuration. Build a Project with instructions and knowledge, connect a source, and compare Haiku, Sonnet and Opus on the same task for cost, speed and quality.
- Week 4: workflows, governance and troubleshooting. Map one of your own processes onto Claude, write down the data and policy limits, then diagnose a weak prompt and fix it.
- Week 5: timed runs. Work through the questions-only copy in the CCAO-F practice question pack in 120 minute blocks and read the explanation for every miss.
On exam day
After you register and pay, you create a Pearson VUE account and book a slot, either online with a proctor or at a Pearson test centre. You must show valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, and the name on it must match your registration exactly. You may cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment, and changes inside 24 hours forfeit the fee.
Before the exam starts you accept a confidentiality agreement covering all exam content. If you test online, you stay in view of the proctor and webcam, and phones, notes, headphones and other materials are not allowed.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I fail the CCAO-F?
You can retake it after a waiting period that grows with each failed attempt: 14 days after the first, 30 days after the second and 90 days after the third. You can take the exam up to four times in a rolling twelve-month period, and the exam fee applies to each attempt.
Is the practice question pack enough on its own?
No. It is practice, not a course. The 119 questions with explanations show the scenario style and where your gaps are, but the CCAO-F rewards regular hands-on use of Claude in real work. Use Claude properly for a few weeks, then use the questions to check your judgement and rehearse under time.
How do I keep the credential?
It is valid for 12 months. To renew on time you review what has changed and complete a free assessment that is not proctored on the Anthropic Partner Academy. If it lapses you must retake the full exam at the full fee, and Anthropic may require a full retake if the exam content changes significantly.
Does the Associate credential count towards partner tier?
Anthropic states that the Associate - Foundations certification does not count toward Claude Partner Network tier eligibility. Check Anthropic's certification pages if tier requirements matter for your organisation.
