What the PRINCE2 7 Foundation is and who it is for

PRINCE2 7 Foundation, which PeopleCert now lists as PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7), is the entry certification for the PRINCE2 project management method. It tests whether you remember and understand the method: its seven principles, seven practices and seven processes, the people element, and tailoring. PeopleCert describes it as suitable for any career stage, and the syllabus aims it at project managers, aspiring project managers and other project staff such as project board members, team managers and project support.

It is also one of the certifications PeopleCert accepts as a prerequisite for PRINCE2 7 Practitioner, which tests whether you can apply the method to a scenario. Foundation stays at recall and understanding (Bloom's levels 1 and 2), so it rewards precise knowledge of the terms rather than judgement.

Two dates matter. The seventh edition became available for training and certification from 4 September 2023, so older material describes a different method. And in May 2026 PeopleCert renamed the certificate from "PRINCE2 7 Foundation Certificate in Project Management" to "PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation VERSION 7", with no change to the qualification.

What is on the exam

PeopleCert's English exam page lists the topics but no weights. The weights below come from the official syllabus PeopleCert publishes on its Japanese site, which splits the exam into five learning outcomes.

Key concepts of projects and PRINCE2 (3%). The five integrated elements (principles, people, practices, processes and project context), what a project is, the performance aspects you manage, and the delivery approaches: linear and sequential, iterative and incremental, and hybrid.

The principles (8%). The seven principles: ensure continued business justification, learn from experience, define roles, responsibilities and relationships, manage by stages, manage by exception, focus on products, and tailor to suit the project. You also need to know who is responsible for tailoring and how tailoring decisions are documented.

People (14%). The element added in the seventh edition: organisational and project ecosystems, change management, stakeholders, culture, collaboration and co-creation, leadership versus management, communication, and effective teams. Two management products belong here: the change management approach and the communication management approach.

The practices (60%). Business case, organizing, plans, quality, risk, issues and progress. For each one the syllabus asks for its purpose, its links to the principles, the management products that support it, its key terms and its technique. Most of the vocabulary lives here: outputs, outcomes and benefits, the three project interests, product-based planning, quality control versus quality assurance, risk appetite versus risk tolerance, the issue types, and the progress reports from checkpoint to exception report.

The processes (15%). Starting up a project, directing a project, initiating a project, controlling a stage, managing product delivery, managing a stage boundary and closing a project. You are tested on the purpose, objectives and context of each.

Why people fail it

The most common reason is studying the wrong edition. The sixth edition's themes are now practices, organization became organizing, and change became issues, because in PRINCE2 7 not every issue is a change. The people element is new, and it carries 14% of the marks, which is more than the principles and the key concepts put together. Notes that still say themes will cost you those questions.

The second reason is near-enough knowledge. The syllabus says the wrong options are generally plausible answers related to the area of the syllabus being tested, so a question about a highlight report can easily offer a checkpoint report as the trap. The question types add to this: list questions ask you to pick the two correct statements out of four, and negative questions ask you to spot the option that does not belong, such as the one role that is not a PRINCE2 role.

The third is the clock. Sixty questions in sixty minutes leaves a minute each, closed book. If you have to work out which practice owns a management product, you are already behind.

A study plan that fits the exam

Six weeks is realistic alongside a job. The practices get most of the time because they carry most of the marks.

  1. Week 1: Integrated elements, key concepts and the seven principles. Try the free PRINCE2 7 Foundation practice questions cold to see where you start.
  2. Week 2: The people element, then the business case practice: outputs, outcomes, benefits, and the purpose of the project brief and business case.
  3. Week 3: Organizing and plans. Learn the project board roles, the three project interests, the levels of plan and product-based planning.
  4. Week 4: Quality and risk. Separate quality control from quality assurance, and risk appetite from risk tolerance, until you never confuse them.
  5. Week 5: Issues and progress. Memorise the issue types, how tolerances work and the purpose of every report, then drill mixed practice questions across all seven practices.
  6. Week 6: The seven processes, then timed runs of 60 questions in 60 minutes. The PRINCE2 7 Foundation practice pack has 120 questions with explanations for every option, so you can work out why each wrong answer is wrong.

On exam day

For an online exam PeopleCert asks for a government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth in English characters, a quiet, well-lit room with a clear desk and nobody else present, one webcam you can rotate (not a phone), speakers, a microphone and at least 4 Mbps of broadband. The proctor sees you and your screen throughout.

If you need to move your exam, rescheduling is free up to 48 hours before the start. After that PeopleCert charges a fee, which rises again inside the last 4 hours. You get preliminary results on screen when you finish, and official results within 2 business days, with a percentage score per topic.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I fail?

You can buy another exam. PeopleCert also sells a re-sit option called Take2, which you must buy before the exam, up to 15 minutes before it starts. It cannot be bought after a failed attempt, and the re-sit must be taken within 6 months of the first exam. The most expensive eLearning bundle includes a free exam re-take, and Take2 is free for PeopleCert Plus members.

Does the certification expire?

PeopleCert requires renewal every three years from the certification date. You can renew by logging 20 CPD points a year for three years as a PeopleCert Plus member, by passing another certification in the PRINCE2 product suite, or by passing the same exam again. If you do not renew, you stay on the Successful Candidates Register, but your record is marked as needing renewal.

Is the practice pack enough on its own?

Honestly, no. It is practice, not a course. It shows whether you can tell neighbouring terms apart under time pressure, but learn the method from the official guidance or an accredited course first, then use practice questions to close the gaps.
