Three of the 242 questions in this pack

Question 1

What is one potential benefit of using a test automation tool?

  1. The quality of defects will improve
  2. Ease of access to statistics about test progress
  3. Disk space is not required to track versions of test artifacts
  4. Less network traffic generated
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Ease of access to statistics about test progress

A test automation tool executes tests and records what happened, so the numbers needed to report progress, tests run, passed, failed, and coverage achieved, fall out of the tool as a by-product. That easy access to objective statistics about test progress is one of the standard benefits of automation.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Automation changes how tests are run, not how well defects are written up. The quality of a defect report depends on the person raising it.
  • C. Automation adds artifacts such as scripts, test data, and results, so it consumes more storage rather than removing the need to version test artifacts.
  • D. Network traffic is a property of the system under test and how it is deployed. Automating the tests does not reduce it, and running more tests may increase it.

Question 2

Which of the following is a benefit of early stakeholder feedback?

  1. It can be gathered early and then used to make changes after the product goes to production to make it more user friendly
  2. It allows the project manager to get a better view of the changes that will be needed for the next version
  3. The developers get a better understanding of what they are building
  4. The testers get a better understanding of the test automation requirements
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. The developers get a better understanding of what they are building

they are building Feedback gathered early tells the team whether what is being built is what is actually wanted, while there is still time to act on it. The direct benefit is that developers understand the product they are building, so misunderstandings are corrected before they are coded rather than after.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Waiting until the product is in production to act on the feedback removes the whole advantage of gathering it early, because changes then cost far more.
  • B. Helping a project manager anticipate changes for a future version is a side effect at best. The point of early feedback is to correct the current work.
  • D. Test automation requirements are a technical concern for the test team. Stakeholder feedback is about the product's behaviour and value.

Question 3

Which of the following is a good testing practice that applies regardless of the specific software development lifecycle being used?

  1. Prompt and prepared attendance to stand-up meetings
  2. Step-by-step test case documentation
  3. Ensuring there is a corresponding testing activity for every software development activity
  4. Involving the stakeholders in reviewing all acceptance criteria prior to designing test cases
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Ensuring there is a corresponding testing activity for every software development activity

every software development activity Whatever lifecycle is in use, one practice always holds: every development activity has a corresponding testing activity. That is what keeps testing in step with development instead of arriving at the end, and it applies equally to sequential, iterative, and incremental models.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Stand-up meetings belong to particular Agile practices. A sequential project may hold no stand-ups at all.
  • B. The right level of test case documentation depends on the context, and detailed step- by-step scripting is often inappropriate in a fast-moving iterative project.
  • D. Acceptance criteria are an Agile artifact tied to user stories. They are not present in every lifecycle.

What makes the CTFL v4.0 hard

The v4.0 syllabus is not the old CTFL with a new cover. ISTQB rewrote it, and question banks built for v3.1 will actively mislead candidates.

The 2023 rewrite pushed weight onto test techniques and made them harder: boundary value analysis now includes three value boundaries, decision table and state transition questions expect coverage to be calculated, and whole team and agile concepts run through every chapter. Each question is written to a cognitive level, remember, understand or apply, and the apply level ones are small puzzles, not definitions.

The exam is 40 questions in 60 minutes, 26 correct to pass, which sounds generous until four coverage calculation questions land in a row. This pack has 242 practice questions for the v4.0 exam, so the technique puzzles and ISTQB’s exact glossary phrasing are familiar in advance.

About the exam

CTFL v4.0 is the entry certification of the ISTQB scheme, the de facto global baseline for software testing roles, recognised in more than 130 countries. There are no prerequisites, and the certification never expires.

Exam domains

  • Testing throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Static testing: reviews and static analysis
  • Test analysis and design: black-box, white-box, and experience-based techniques
  • Managing the test activities: planning, risk, monitoring
  • Test tools

40 questions, 60 minutes (plus 25% extra time for non-native English speakers), pass mark 65% (26 of 40), US$229 per attempt via ASTQB, the US ISTQB board (other national boards price it differently), lifetime validity.
