What makes the Platform Developer II hard
Platform Developer II is the exam that separates candidates who can write Apex from those who can design it. Every question assumes Platform Developer level knowledge and asks what you would do at scale: bulkified, asynchronous, governed by limits, and testable. The format is 60 scored questions plus up to five unscored in 120 minutes, with a 70% pass mark, and the questions tend to be long: a requirement plus a code sample or an architecture, with several options that would all compile.
Process Automation, Logic and Integration is the largest section at 27%: choosing between Flow, triggers and Apex, trigger frameworks and recursion control, asynchronous Apex (future, queueable, batch and scheduled jobs) and when each fits, platform events and change data capture, REST and SOAP callouts, named credentials, and building Apex REST services. User Interface and Testing, Debugging and Deployment each carry 20%. User Interface covers Lightning Web Components, the component lifecycle, wire and imperative Apex, Lightning Data Service, and events between components. Testing covers test data factories, mocking callouts, test isolation, code coverage strategy, debug logs, the Apex Replay Debugger, and deployment through change sets, the Metadata API, scratch orgs and unlocked packages.
Performance sits at 18%: SOQL selectivity, indexes, large data volumes, skinny tables, governor limits, caching with Platform Cache, and reducing view state. Advanced Developer Fundamentals, the smallest section at 15%, covers the security model in code, sharing keywords, CRUD and field level security enforcement, custom metadata and custom settings, and common design patterns. Reading the code sample before the answer options is usually the fastest way to the right one, since the answer is often in what the sample does wrong.
