What makes the DP-900 hard

Fundamentals does not mean easy, it means broad. The DP-900 covers the entire Azure data estate in 45 minutes, and the wrong answers are engineered to sound right.

The recurring trap is service selection at speed: Azure SQL Database versus Managed Instance versus SQL on a VM, Cosmos DB versus Table Storage, Synapse versus Databricks versus Fabric, and when a data lake beats a warehouse. Add a vocabulary layer, OLTP versus OLAP, structured versus semi-structured, batch versus streaming, where one word in the question decides the answer.

It is the standard entry ticket for every Azure data role, and the prerequisite knowledge for DP-300, DP-600 and DP-700.

About the exam

DP-900 certifies foundational knowledge of core data concepts and how they are implemented with Azure data services: relational, non-relational and analytics workloads. No prerequisites, and the certification never expires.

Exam domains

  • Core data concepts: 25 to 30%
  • Relational data on Azure: 20 to 25%
  • Non-relational data on Azure: 15 to 20%
  • Analytics workloads on Azure: 25 to 30%

Around 40 to 50 questions, 45 minutes, passing score 700 out of 1000, US$99 in the US, priced by local currency elsewhere, online proctored or test centre, never expires.
