What makes the ECES hard
ECES is a small exam with a narrow subject: 50 questions in two hours on nothing but cryptography. That makes it deceptively hard, because there is nowhere to hide. Every question is about an algorithm, a mode, a key length, a protocol or an attack, and the v3 update brought in post-quantum cryptography and quantum computing threats, which older material does not cover at all.
The blueprint follows the ECES course: classical ciphers and foundations, symmetric cryptography and hashes including AES, block cipher modes and SHA family hashing, number theory and asymmetric cryptography covering Diffie-Hellman, RSA and elliptic curves, applied cryptography including PKI, TLS, IPsec and disk encryption, cryptanalysis, and the newer quantum and post-quantum module.
The passing score is 70%, and with only 50 questions covering six topic areas, a weak spot in any one of them costs several marks at once.
