CCST Networking is Cisco’s entry point below CCNA, built for people who have never configured a network device. It runs 50 minutes with no prerequisites, is delivered through Certiport rather than Pearson VUE, and Cisco positions it explicitly as the stepping stone to CCNA 200-301.
What catches people out is how practical it is for a foundations exam. You are expected to check connectivity on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS, read the status lights on a Cisco device, cable a topology from an engineer’s diagram, identify ports, run basic show commands, capture packets in Wireshark and save the file, interpret diagnostic command output, and follow help desk practice for ticketing and documentation. The concept side covers bandwidth versus throughput, LAN, WAN, MAN, CAN, PAN and WLAN, cloud versus on-premises, common protocols, private versus public addressing, IPv4 subnet and IPv6 prefix formats, cables and connectors, basic routing and switching, how firewalls filter traffic, and foundational security. Study it like a help desk job description rather than a theory exam and the questions make sense.
