What the Google Generative AI Leader is and who it is for

The Generative AI Leader is one of Google Cloud's two foundational certifications. Google describes the holder as someone with business-level knowledge of Google Cloud's generative AI offerings, who understands how generative AI can transform a business and who can spot opportunities to use it across business functions and industries.

Google says the certification is for anyone in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience, and it has no prerequisites. The exam guide is clear that the expertise it tests is strategic leadership and influence, not technical implementation. You need a conceptual understanding of how models, agents and grounding work, and the judgement to pick the right Google offering for a business need. The exam guide lists no coding tasks.

Google has updated the exam to reflect product branding changes, and the certification page asks you to check the exam guide for the product names used on the exam. Names such as Gemini Enterprise, Agent Platform and Agent Search appear there, so study from the current guide.

What is on the exam

Fundamentals of gen AI (about 30%). The core vocabulary: AI, machine learning, natural language processing, foundation and multimodal models, diffusion models, large language models, prompt tuning and prompt engineering. It covers supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning, the stages of the machine learning lifecycle and the Google Cloud tools for each, and how to choose a foundation model by modality, context window, cost and performance. Then data: quality, structured versus unstructured and labelled versus unlabelled data. It ends with the five layers of the gen AI landscape (infrastructure, models, platforms, agents and applications) and what Gemini, Gemma, Imagen and Veo are each good at.

Google Cloud's gen AI offerings (about 35%). The most heavily weighted section. It starts with why Google Cloud claims an edge: an AI-first approach, an enterprise-ready platform, an open approach and AI-optimised infrastructure with TPUs and GPUs. Then the products: the Gemini app and Gems, Gemini Enterprise, Gemini for Google Workspace, Agent Search, the Customer Engagement Suite with Conversational Agents and Agent Assist, and Agent Platform with Model Garden and AutoML. It closes on agents: how they use tools such as extensions, functions and data stores, which Google APIs serve as agent tooling, and when to use Agent Studio or Google AI Studio.

Techniques to improve gen AI model output (about 20%). The limits of foundation models, such as knowledge cutoff, bias and hallucinations, and how Google recommends addressing them: grounding, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt engineering, fine-tuning and keeping a human in the loop. You need the prompting techniques by name, from zero-shot and few-shot to chain-of-thought and ReAct, the difference between grounding with enterprise, third-party and world data, and what temperature, top-p and output length settings do.

Business strategies for a successful gen AI solution (about 15%). Choosing the right solution for a business need, the steps to bring gen AI into an organisation and how to measure its impact. Then secure AI, including Google's Secure AI Framework (SAIF), IAM and Security Command Center, and responsible AI: transparency, privacy, bias, fairness, accountability and explainability.

Why people fail it

The main trap is the product section. At about 35% it carries the most weight, and many questions offer several Google products that all sound plausible: Gemini Enterprise or Gemini for Google Workspace, Agent Search or a custom agent on Agent Platform, Agent Studio or Google AI Studio. Candidates who know generative AI in general but have not learned what each Google product is for lose marks here.

The second is product names. Google has updated the exam for branding changes, so a course or notes written before the update can use names that no longer match the guide. Map every product you study to the name in the current exam guide.

The third is the technique section. Terms like grounding, RAG, fine-tuning and prompt tuning blur together for non-technical candidates. The exam expects you to match each of Google's recommended practices to the limitations it addresses.

A study plan that fits the exam

Six weeks suits most people new to generative AI. Google Cloud's offerings carry the most weight, so they get two weeks.

  1. Week 1: core concepts. The vocabulary, machine learning approaches and lifecycle, and how to choose a foundation model. Take the free Generative AI Leader practice questions to see where you stand.
  2. Week 2: data and the landscape. Data quality and data types, the five layers of the gen AI landscape, and the strengths of Gemini, Gemma, Imagen and Veo.
  3. Week 3: Google's platform and prebuilt products. Google Cloud's AI strengths and infrastructure, then the Gemini app, Gemini Enterprise and Gemini for Google Workspace. Write one business use case for each.
  4. Week 4: customer experience, developers and agents. Agent Search, the Customer Engagement Suite, Agent Platform, RAG offerings, agent tooling and when to use Agent Studio or Google AI Studio.
  5. Week 5: improving output. Model limitations and their fixes, prompting techniques, grounding options and sampling settings.
  6. Week 6: strategy, security and timed runs. Implementation steps, SAIF and responsible AI, then work through the questions-only copy in the Generative AI Leader practice question pack in 90 minute blocks and read the explanation for every miss.

Google also publishes a Generative AI Leader learning path, a study guide and sample questions. The sample questions are untimed, and Google says your score on them should not be used to predict your exam result.

On exam day

You register through Google Cloud and choose between an online proctored exam taken remotely and an onsite exam at a test centre. Check the online testing requirements before you book a remote exam, and review the exam terms and conditions, which you must accept to take part.

You have 90 minutes for 50 to 60 questions, which leaves at least a minute and a half for each one. Read each question for the business goal before you look at the options.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I fail the Generative AI Leader?

Google treats it as a foundational exam. You can make up to ten attempts in one year and must wait at least 14 days after each failed attempt. You pay each time you sit the exam, and attempts in different languages all count toward the limit.

Is the practice question pack enough on its own?

No. It is practice, not a course. The 99 questions with explanations show how Google frames scenarios and where your gaps are, but they do not replace learning what each product and technique does. Work through Google's learning path and exam guide first, then use the questions to test yourself under time.

How do I renew the certification?

It is valid for three years. Google offers a renewal exam as well as the standard exam, and for foundational certifications you can start renewing 180 days before your certification expires. Passing a renewal exam extends the certification by three years from the date you pass.

What people say about this pack

This exam wasn’t easy, but the practice questions I used helped me a lot. I practiced with exam questions, and it made the real exam feel much more manageable.
