What the Google Associate Cloud Engineer is and who it is for

The Associate Cloud Engineer certification is Google Cloud's associate level credential for people who run workloads on Google Cloud. Google describes the role as someone who deploys and secures applications, services and infrastructure, monitors the operations of multiple projects, and maintains enterprise solutions to meet target performance metrics, performing common platform tasks supported by AI tooling.

There are no prerequisites. Google recommends at least six months of hands-on experience with Google Cloud before you sit the exam, and says the person it has in mind has experience with public clouds or on-premises solutions. In practice that means you should be comfortable in the Google Cloud console and on the command line, not only in slides.

Google has updated the exam to reflect branding changes and points you to the exam guide for the product names used. One example in the guide: Vertex AI Agent Engine and Vertex AI Workbench appear under their newer names, Agent Runtime on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Workbench. If your study material uses the old names, map them before exam day.

Google does not publish a passing score on the certification page or in the exam guide, so aim to be solid across all four sections rather than chasing a number.

What is on the exam

Setting up a cloud solution environment (about 20%). Building a resource hierarchy, applying organisation policies, granting IAM roles within a project, managing users and groups in Cloud Identity, enabling APIs, checking quotas, and setting up Google Cloud Observability and Workforce Identity Federation. The billing half covers billing accounts, linking projects, budgets and alerts, and billing exports.

Planning and implementing a cloud solution (about 30%). Choosing between Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run and Cloud Run functions for a workload, launching instances, picking disk types, building autoscaled managed instance groups from templates, Spot VMs, and deploying GKE clusters (including Autopilot and private clusters). Storage and data cover Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Firestore, Spanner, Bigtable, AlloyDB, Pub/Sub and the Cloud Storage classes. Networking covers VPCs and subnets, Shared VPC, peering, Cloud NGFW firewall policies, Cloud VPN and Interconnect, load balancers and Network Service Tiers. It ends with tooling: Terraform, Config Connector and Helm, and AI assistants such as Gemini CLI and Gemini Cloud Assist.

Ensuring the successful operation of a cloud solution (about 30%). Day-two work: snapshots and images, GKE node pools, Pods and autoscaling, Cloud Run revisions and traffic splitting, and attaching GPUs and TPUs. For data you manage bucket lifecycle policies, run queries, back up and restore databases and configure CMEK. Networking tasks include resizing a subnet, reserving static IPs, custom routes, Cloud DNS and Cloud NAT. Monitoring and logging close the section: alerts, custom metrics, audit and flow logs, log routers and exports, Ops Agent and Managed Service for Prometheus.

Configuring access and security (about 20%). IAM policies, policy inheritance through the hierarchy, basic, predefined and custom roles, and service accounts: creating them, granting least privilege, impersonation, short-lived credentials, using them from GKE and Workload Identity Federation.

Why people fail it

The exam is practical. Many topics in the guide are tasks, such as launching an instance, resizing a subnet or adding a node pool, so expect to be asked how you would do something, not only what a service is. If you have read about Google Cloud but rarely used the console or command line, the options start to look alike.

Service selection is the second trap. Several compute options can run the same workload, and several databases can store the same data. The question carries the constraint that decides it: managed or self-managed, containers or functions, global consistency or analytics. Read for that detail before you look at the options.

IAM is the third. Google expects you to choose the right role type at the right level of the resource hierarchy and to understand inheritance. Least privilege runs through the objectives, so a broad role granted high in the hierarchy is a warning sign in an answer option.

A study plan that fits the exam

Seven weeks suits most people with some Google Cloud time. The two 30% sections get two weeks each, and the 20% sections get one week each.

  1. Week 1: environment setup. Create a project inside a folder, apply an organisation policy, grant roles, enable APIs and set a billing budget with an alert. Take the free Associate Cloud Engineer practice questions to find your gaps.
  2. Week 2: compute. Launch VMs with different disks, build a managed instance group from a template, deploy to Cloud Run and to a GKE Autopilot cluster, and compare when each fits.
  3. Week 3: data, networking and tooling. Load data into Cloud Storage and BigQuery, compare the database products, build a custom VPC with firewall policies, and deploy a resource with Terraform.
  4. Week 4: operating compute. Snapshots and images, node pools, Pod autoscaling, Cloud Run revisions and traffic splitting.
  5. Week 5: operating data, networks and logs. Lifecycle rules, database backups, Cloud NAT and Cloud DNS, then alerts, log routers, log exports and Ops Agent.
  6. Week 6: access and security. Custom roles, policy inheritance, service accounts, impersonation and Workload Identity Federation. Review Google's sample questions.
  7. Week 7: timed runs. Work through the questions-only copy in the Associate Cloud Engineer practice question pack in two hour blocks and read the explanation for every miss.

On exam day

You register through your CM Connect account and choose online or onsite. The price is the same either way. Online exams use Pearson's OnVUE service. You can launch the session from 10 minutes before to 20 minutes after your scheduled time, and identity and room checks take between 5 and 15 minutes before the exam starts. If you do not launch in that window, the session is cancelled and you lose the fee.

No breaks are allowed. A break ends the session and Google rejects the result, so plan for two hours in one sitting. If you need a break for a medical reason, request it as an accommodation before you schedule. The exam is not open book: your desk must be clear of notes.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I fail the Associate Cloud Engineer exam?

You can retake it after 14 days. If you fail a second time, you wait 60 days, and after a third failure you wait 365 days. You have a maximum of four attempts in a two year period, and you pay for each attempt.

How do I renew it?

The certification lasts three years. You can renew by sitting the standard exam again, by taking a shorter renewal exam (one hour, 20 questions, US$75 plus tax where applicable) or by completing designated courses or skill badges in Google Skills. If you renew by exam, you can start 180 days before your certification expires. Courses or skill badges count toward renewal only if you complete them within the last year of the certification's active date.

Is the practice question pack enough on its own?

No. It is practice, not a course. The 375 questions with explanations show how Google frames service choices and where your gaps are, but this exam rewards time in a real Google Cloud project. Build things yourself, then use the questions to check what you know under time.

When you are ready to test yourself properly, get the Associate Cloud Engineer practice questions with full explanations.
