Three of the 159 questions in this pack

Question 1

Who starts the Daily Scrum?

  1. The person coming in last. This encourages people to be on time and helps to stay within the time-box.
  2. Whoever the Development Team decides should start.
  3. The person who has the token.
  4. The Scrum Master. This ensures that the Development Team has the meeting and stays within the time-box.
  5. The person who last broke the build.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Whoever the Development Team decides should start.

The Scrum framework does not prescribe who starts the Daily Scrum. The Development Team is self-organizing and decides how to conduct their own meetings, including who facilitates or starts the discussion. While the Scrum Master ensures the meeting happens and timebox is respected, the team retains autonomy over their internal processes.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Scrum does not use incentive-based mechanisms like this to encourage punctuality.
  • C. There is no 'token' mechanism in Scrum for determining who starts meetings.
  • D. The Scrum Master facilitates the process but does not necessarily start the meeting; the Development Team is self-organizing.
  • E. Build failures have no bearing on who starts the Daily Scrum.

Question 2

When can a Development Team cancel a Sprint?

  1. When a technical dependency cannot be resolved.
  2. When the selected Product Backlog items for the Sprint become unachievable.
  3. When the Product Owner is absent too often.
  4. It cannot. Only Product Owners can cancel Sprints.
  5. When functional expectations are not well understood.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. It cannot. Only Product Owners can cancel Sprints.

Only the Product Owner has the authority to cancel a Sprint. The Product Owner can cancel a Sprint if the Sprint Goal becomes obsolete or if circumstances change significantly. The Development Team cannot cancel a Sprint unilaterally, regardless of technical challenges, unachievable items, or other difficulties they encounter.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Technical dependencies, while challenging, do not give the Development Team authority to cancel a Sprint.
  • B. The Development Team works to resolve unachievable items through re-planning, but cannot cancel the Sprint.
  • C. The Product Owner's absence is addressed through process adjustments, not Sprint cancellation authority.
  • E. Unclear requirements are handled through clarification and collaboration, not by canceling the Sprint.

Question 3

How should a Development Team deal with non-functional requirements?

  1. Make sure the release department understands these requirements, but it is not the Development Team's responsibility.
  2. Assign them to the lead developers on the team.
  3. Handle them during the Integration Sprint preceding the Release Sprint.
  4. Ensure every Increment meets them.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. Ensure every Increment meets them.

The Development Team is responsible for ensuring that every Increment meets non- functional requirements such as performance, security, scalability, and maintainability. Non-functional requirements are part of the Definition of Done and must be met in every Sprint, not deferred to later phases or treated as secondary concerns.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Non-functional requirements are the Development Team's responsibility, not just the release department's.
  • B. Non-functional requirements are a team concern, not assigned solely to lead developers.
  • C. Non-functional requirements must be met in every Sprint, not deferred to a separate integration or hardening phase.

What makes the PSPO I hard

The format is the same as PSM I, 80 questions in 60 minutes with an 85% pass mark, but the trap is different: PSPO I tests ownership and value thinking, and Scrum Masters who cross over to it tend to keep answering from the wrong accountability.

The recurring themes are who orders the Product Backlog (only the Product Owner), what the Product Owner can delegate versus what stays theirs, value measurement over output, and how the Product Goal shapes everything downstream. The distractors read like reasonable stakeholder management moves; the correct answers are what the Scrum Guide’s Product Owner does, which is often less accommodating.

It is unproctored and open book in theory, but impossible to look anything up in practice at 45 seconds a question, so familiarity with the wording matters more than the ability to search for it on the day.

About the exam

PSPO I is Scrum.org’s entry Product Owner certification, based strictly on the current Scrum Guide, with emphasis on value delivery, Product Backlog management and stakeholder engagement. There are no prerequisites and no mandatory training, and it never expires.

Exam topics

  • Scrum framework fundamentals and empiricism
  • Product Owner accountability and the Product Goal
  • Product Backlog management and ordering
  • Maximising and measuring value
  • Stakeholders, forecasting and release strategy

80 questions, 60 minutes, passing score 85%, multiple choice and true/false, taken online unproctored, US$200 per attempt, lifetime validity.
