What makes the PSM I hard

The pass mark is 85%, the highest bar of any entry-level certification exam. Eighty questions in 60 minutes works out to 45 seconds each, and you need 68 of them right.

There is no proctor, and technically nothing stops you opening the Scrum Guide, but anyone who has sat it will tell you there is no time to look anything up. The questions are written to punish candidates who know Scrum from their job rather than from the Guide, and what a company calls Scrum and what the Scrum Guide says are often two different things.

The traps are precise wording: who owns the Sprint Backlog, what happens when the Sprint Goal becomes obsolete, whether the Scrum Master assigns work (never), and what is mandatory versus common practice. Seeing that wording before the exam is most of the preparation.

About the exam

PSM I is Scrum.org’s entry level Scrum Master certification, based strictly on the current Scrum Guide. There are no prerequisites and no mandatory training, and the certification never expires: no renewal fees, ever.

Exam topics

  • Scrum theory and empiricism: transparency, inspection, adaptation
  • The Scrum framework: accountabilities, events and artifacts
  • Definition of Done and quality
  • Self-managing teams and the Scrum Master’s stance
  • Product Backlog management and the Product Goal

80 questions, 60 minutes, passing score 85%, multiple choice and true/false, taken online unproctored, US$200 per attempt, lifetime validity.
