What the Google Professional Cloud Architect is and who it is for

Professional Cloud Architect is Google Cloud's certification for people who design and run whole solutions on the platform. Google says a certified architect can "design, develop, and manage robust, secure, scalable, efficient, cost-effective, highly available, and flexible solutions that drive business objectives", covering cloud strategy, solution design, workload migration and architectural best practice.

There are no prerequisites, but Google recommends three or more years of industry experience, including at least one year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud. It also calls familiarity with the Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework "a key requirement for this role", and says the framework's pillars run through the exam objectives.

The certification page notes that the exam "was updated to reflect recent branding changes" and points to the exam guide for the product names used. The exam guide uses names such as Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and Model Armor, so notes written before the rename will read differently from the questions.

What is on the exam

The exam guide splits the content into six sections with approximate weights. Each exam also includes 2 case studies, and case study questions make up 20 to 30% of the exam. Google names the four that may be used: Altostrat Media (a media company adding generative AI to its content platform), Cymbal Retail (an online retailer automating its catalogue and adding conversational shopping), EHR Healthcare (a health record software provider replacing its colocation facilities) and KnightMotives Automotive (a car maker modernising its vehicles and dealer tools). You can view them on a split screen during the exam.

Designing and planning a cloud solution architecture (about 25%). Turning business requirements (continuity, cost, KPIs, build versus buy) and technical ones (availability, scalability, latency, backup) into a design, choosing network, storage, compute and AI services such as Gemini models and Model Garden, and writing a migration plan.

Managing and provisioning a cloud solution infrastructure (about 17.5%). Hybrid and multicloud networking, VPC design and load balancing, storage lifecycle and data protection, spot versus standard compute, containers and serverless, plus ML workflows on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, GPUs and TPUs, and Google's prebuilt AI APIs.

Designing for security and compliance (about 17.5%). IAM and the resource hierarchy, Cloud KMS, VPC Service Controls, Identity-Aware Proxy, software supply chain security and securing AI with Model Armor. The compliance part covers health and children's privacy, data sovereignty, card data and PII, SOC 2 and audit logs.

Analyzing and optimizing technical and business processes (about 15%). The software development lifecycle, CI/CD, root cause analysis and disaster recovery, plus stakeholder management, change management, team skills readiness and CapEx versus OpEx.

Managing implementation (about 12.5%). Advising teams on deployment, API management with Apigee, testing frameworks, and working programmatically with gcloud, bq, the Cloud emulators and Terraform.

Ensuring solution and operations excellence (about 12.5%). The operational excellence pillar, monitoring, logging and alerting with Google Cloud Observability, release management and reliability testing such as chaos engineering and load testing.

Why people fail it

The case studies are the part people underestimate. With 20 to 30% of the exam tied to two of the four published scenarios, walking in without having read them means digesting dense business context against the clock. The requirements decide the answer. EHR Healthcare, for example, needs at least 99.9% availability on customer-facing systems and manages users through Microsoft Active Directory, and an option that ignores either is wrong however elegant it looks.

The second trap is picking an answer that works instead of the one that fits best. Scenario questions often offer several technically valid designs. The right one meets the stated cost, compliance or operational constraint most directly. Experienced engineers who answer from habit lose marks here.

Third, the blueprint carries a real share of AI and ML architecture: Agent Platform pipelines, AI Hypercomputer, Model Garden and securing AI workloads. Candidates working from older material meet unfamiliar product names. And the business process topics feel soft, so people skip them, but they sit in a section worth about 15%.

A study plan that fits the exam

This six-week plan follows the section weights and gives the case studies time of their own.

  1. Week 1: Read the exam guide and all four case studies, noting each company's requirements. Then start section 1: business and technical requirements and the Well-Architected Framework.
  2. Week 2: Finish section 1: service choices and migration planning. Try the free Google Cloud Architect practice questions to see where you stand.
  3. Week 3: Section 2: networking, storage, compute provisioning and the Agent Platform and AI API topics.
  4. Week 4: Section 3: IAM, Cloud KMS, VPC Service Controls, AI security and the compliance scenarios, mapped back to the case studies.
  5. Week 5: Sections 4 and 5: SDLC, disaster recovery and the business process topics, then Apigee, gcloud and Terraform.
  6. Week 6: Section 6, then timed runs. Work through the 360 Professional Cloud Architect practice questions under a 2 hour limit and reread the case studies behind any you miss.

On exam day

The price is the same online or at a test centre. For an online exam, run the system test and download the OnVUE application at least 24 hours ahead, clear your desk of everything but the computer and have your government-issued photo ID ready. You can launch from 10 minutes before to 20 minutes after your booked time, and identity and room checks take 5 to 15 minutes. At a test centre, arrive at least 15 minutes early with two forms of identification, one a government-issued photo ID.

No breaks are allowed, so plan to sit the full 2 hours in one go and leave extra time for the split-screen case study questions. You see a provisional pass or fail on screen when you submit, and Google asks you to allow 7 to 10 days for confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I fail?

Google allows four attempts at a Professional exam in a two year period. After a first fail you can retake after 14 days, after a second you wait 60 days, and after a third you wait 365 days. You pay each time. A failed attempt gives you a section-level score report to guide your revision.

How do I renew the certification?

You can retake the standard exam or take the shorter renewal exam: 1 hour, 25 questions, US$100 plus tax, built around 1 generative AI case study. Both open 60 days before your certification's inactive date and add 2 years. Professional Cloud Architect can also be renewed through designated courses or skill badges in Google Skills, completed in the final year, which adds 1 year.

Is the practice pack enough on its own?

No, and it is not meant to be. The pack is practice questions with explanations, not a course. It shows how scenario and case study questions are framed and where your gaps are, but you still need hands-on time with Google Cloud and Google's own learning path to fill them.
