Three of the 65 questions in this pack

Question 1

You are working as a test manager in the medical domain leading a team of system testers. You are currently working on a major release of the product which gives customers many new features and resolves a number of problem reports from previous releases. You are about to release a test progress report to a senior manager, who is not a test specialist. Which of the following topics should NOT be included in the test progress report? 1 credit

  1. Product risks which have been mitigated and those which are outstanding.
  2. Recommendations for taking controlling actions
  3. Status compared against the started exit criteria
  4. Detailed overview of the risk-based test approach being used to ensure the exit criteria to be achieved
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. Detailed overview of the risk-based test approach being used to ensure the exit criteria to be achieved

being used to ensure the exit criteria to be achieved A test progress report to senior management should focus on business-relevant information including mitigated and outstanding risks, recommendations for action, and status against exit criteria. A detailed overview of the risk-based test approach is a technical implementation detail that belongs in test documentation but is unnecessarily granular for senior management reporting, which requires high-level summaries rather than methodological deep-dives.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Product risk status is essential information for senior management decision-making.
  • B. Recommendations for controlling actions are critical for management to understand what decisions are needed.
  • C. Exit criteria status is fundamental to demonstrating whether the release decision can be made.

Question 2

You are working as a test manager in the medical domain leading a team of system testers. You are currently working on a major release of the product which gives customers many new features and resolves a number of problem reports from previous releases. Explain how the above mentioned report may differ from a report that you produce for the project manager, who is a test specialist Select TWO items from the following options that can be used to report to the project manager and would not be included in a report to senior management. 1 credit

  1. Show details on effort spent
  2. List of all outstanding defects with their priority and severity
  3. Give product risk status
  4. Show trend analysis
  5. State recommendations for release
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A, B

A. Show details on effort spent B. List of all outstanding defects with their priority and severity A project manager who is a test specialist needs detailed technical and operational information that senior management does not require. Details on effort spent and the complete list of outstanding defects with priority and severity are granular, technical metrics useful for project management and resource planning but too detailed for senior management, who need only summary-level information and strategic recommendations.

Why the other options are wrong

  • C. Product risk status is equally important for both senior management and test specialists.
  • D. Trend analysis is useful for both audiences to understand progress over time.
  • E. Recommendations for release are critical for senior management to make business decisions.

Question 3

You are working as a test manager in the medical domain leading a team of system testers. You are currently working on a major release of the product which gives customers many new features and resolves a number of problem reports from previous releases. Consider the typical objectives of testing. Which of the following metrics can be used to measure the effectiveness of the testing process in achieving one of those objectives? 1 credit

  1. Average number of days between defect discovery and resolution
  2. Percentage of requirements covered
  3. Lines of code written per developer per day
  4. Percentage of test effort spent on regression testing
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Percentage of requirements covered

The percentage of requirements covered directly measures the primary objective of testing: to ensure adequate verification that the system meets its specified requirements. This metric demonstrates whether testing has achieved sufficient coverage of the defined functionality. The other options either measure process efficiency (A and D) or development productivity (C) rather than testing effectiveness in meeting core testing objectives.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. This metric measures defect resolution speed, not the effectiveness of finding defects or verifying requirements.
  • C. This measures development productivity, which is unrelated to testing objectives.
  • D. This measures the allocation of testing effort but not whether testing has verified requirements adequately.

What makes the CTAL-TM hard

CTAL-TM v3.0 is a different exam from the 2012 Test Manager syllabus it replaced. The English v2.0 exam retired on 30 May 2025, the module was renamed from Test Manager to Test Management, and the content was rebuilt around agile, DevOps and hybrid lifecycles rather than treating agile as a side chapter. Material written for the old seven-chapter syllabus answers questions the new exam does not ask.

It is 50 scenario based questions in 120 minutes, scored on 88 points with 58 needed to pass. Questions are worth one, two or three points by cognitive level, and there are no pure recall questions at Advanced Level, so the higher-point scenarios carry the exam.

The syllabus covers managing the test activities across the lifecycle, including planning, estimation, infrastructure, monitoring, control and completion, and defect management; managing product risks through identification, assessment and risk based prioritisation; and improving the testing process, including improvement models, tool selection and an automation strategy, and building a test team. Expect a paragraph of project context followed by a question about the best next action for the test manager, with several defensible options. This pack has 65 practice questions for the CTAL-TM.

About the exam

CTAL-TM v3.0 is a Core Advanced Level ISTQB certification. It covers managing the test activities, managing the product risks, and improving the testing process including tools, automation strategy and team skills, across sequential, agile and hybrid software development lifecycles. The prerequisite is the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level, and the syllabus is version 3.0, released May 2024.

Exam domains

  • Managing the test activities: planning, estimation, monitoring, control, completion and defect management
  • Managing the product risks: risk identification, assessment and risk-based testing
  • Improving the testing process: process improvement, test tools and automation strategy, and people and team skills

ISTQB weights areas by points rather than percentages.

50 multiple-choice questions, 120 minutes (25% extra time for non-native English speakers), pass mark 58 of 88 points, exam fee set by the national board, typically around US$250, delivered by ISTQB exam providers at test centres or online, certification does not expire.
