Three of the 197 questions in this pack

Question 1

You are developing a new application on a VM that is on your corporate network. The application will use Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) to connect to Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. Your Cloud SQL instance is configured with IP address 192.168.3.48, and SSL is disabled. You want to ensure that your application can access your database instance without requiring configuration changes to your database. What should you do?

  1. Define a connection string using your Google username and password to point to the external (public) IP address of your Cloud SQL instance.
  2. Define a connection string using a database username and password to point to the internal (private) IP address of your Cloud SQL instance.
  3. Define a connection string using Cloud SQL Auth proxy configured with a service account to point to the internal (private) IP address of your Cloud SQL instance.
  4. Define a connection string using Cloud SQL Auth proxy configured with a service account to point to the external (public) IP address of your Cloud SQL instance.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Define a connection string using Cloud SQL Auth proxy configured with a service account to point to the internal (private) IP address of your Cloud SQL instance.

proxy configured with a service account to point to the internal (private) IP address of your Cloud SQL instance. Cloud SQL Auth proxy is the Google-recommended approach for secure database connectivity. It handles authentication via service accounts, encrypts connections, and works with both public and private IP addresses. Using the private IP address (192.168.3.48) with Auth proxy requires no database configuration changes and provides the most secure, managed connection method. The Auth proxy manages all credential handling transparently to the application.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Using Google username and password is insecure and not a supported authentication method for JDBC connections to Cloud SQL.
  • B. While a direct connection to the private IP with database credentials might work, it bypasses Cloud SQL Auth proxy security benefits and doesn't follow Google- recommended practices.
  • D. Auth proxy should point to the private IP address, not the public IP address, to maintain security within the internal network.

Question 2

Your digital-native business runs its database workloads on Cloud SQL. Your website must be globally accessible 24/7. You need to prepare your Cloud SQL instance for high availability (HA). You want to follow Google-recommended practices. What should you do? (Choose two.)

  1. Set up manual backups.
  2. Create a PostgreSQL database on-premises as the HA option.
  3. Configure single zone availability for automated backups.
  4. Enable point-in-time recovery.
  5. Schedule automated backups.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D, E

D. Enable point-in-time recovery. E. Schedule automated backups. Point-in-time recovery (D) enables restoration to any specific point in time, which is essential for HA and disaster recovery scenarios. Scheduled automated backups (E) ensure regular, consistent backup creation without manual intervention, supporting 24/7 availability requirements. These two practices combined provide both preventive backup coverage and recovery flexibility needed for global 24/7 uptime. Manual backups lack automation, single zone availability contradicts HA best practices, and on-premises alternatives defeat the cloud migration purpose.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Manual backups are unreliable and don't scale for 24/7 global operations requiring consistent protection.
  • B. On-premises HA options contradict the goal of moving to Google Cloud and complicate management.
  • C. Single zone availability is the opposite of HA best practices; multi-zone or multi- region configurations are required for high availability.

Question 3

Your company wants to move to Google Cloud. Your current data center is closing in six months. You are running a large, highly transactional Oracle application footprint on VMWare. You need to design a solution with minimal disruption to the current architecture and provide ease of migration to Google Cloud. What should you do?

  1. Migrate applications and Oracle databases to Google Cloud VMware Engine (VMware Engine).
  2. Migrate applications and Oracle databases to Compute Engine.
  3. Migrate applications to Cloud SQL.
  4. Migrate applications and Oracle databases to Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Migrate applications and Oracle databases to Google Cloud VMware Engine (VMware Engine).

Cloud VMware Engine (VMware Engine). Google Cloud VMware Engine is purpose-built for migrating VMware-based workloads with minimal architectural changes. It allows the Oracle application and databases to run in a familiar VMware environment on Google Cloud infrastructure, preserving the existing architecture while eliminating the need for extensive refactoring. This provides the fastest migration path with minimal disruption during the six-month datacenter closure timeline.

Why the other options are wrong

  • B. Compute Engine would require significant application and database refactoring, contradicting the minimal disruption requirement.
  • C. Cloud SQL is designed for managed relational databases, not for running Oracle applications with their VMware infrastructure dependencies.
  • D. GKE containerization would require substantial redesign and refactoring of the entire Oracle application footprint.

What makes the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam hard

Professional Cloud Database Engineer is the exam for people who choose and run the databases behind Google Cloud applications, and the current guide added vector data and databases that support generative AI and LLM use cases to the design section, so AlloyDB and its AI features now appear alongside Cloud SQL, Spanner, Bigtable, Firestore and Memorystore. The questions are requirement driven: a workload, a consistency or availability need, a budget, and four databases that could all technically work.

Design is about 32% of the exam: capacity and usage planning, multi-regional versus regional versus zonal deployments, connectivity, key management and encryption, and evaluating managed versus self-managed and SQL versus NoSQL including vector databases. Managing a multi-database solution at about 25% covers IAM, backup and recovery with RTO and RPO, scaling, and cost and query optimisation.

Migration at about 23% covers zero and near-zero downtime strategies and choosing between Database Migration Service, Datastream and other tools. Deployment at about 20% covers provisioning highly available databases, testing HA and DR, and automated provisioning and monitoring.

About the exam

The Google Cloud Professional Cloud Database Engineer certification covers designing scalable and highly available database solutions, managing solutions that span multiple database technologies, migrating data solutions, and deploying scalable and highly available databases on Google Cloud. There are no prerequisites; Google recommends five or more years of database experience including two or more on Google Cloud.

Exam sections

  • Design innovative, scalable, and highly available cloud database solutions: about 32%
  • Manage a solution that can span multiple database technologies: about 25%
