What makes the OGA-031 hard

OGA-031 is the Foundation exam for the ArchiMate modelling language, the notation that TOGAF architects use to draw what the ADM describes. It is short and closed book: 40 questions in 60 minutes with 24 correct to pass, and it tests whether candidates know the language precisely, which elements exist in each layer, which relationships are permitted between them, and what the symbols mean.

The Level 1 syllabus covers the language structure and the generic metamodel: active structure, behaviour and passive structure elements, the layered framework across Business, Application and Technology, the motivation and strategy aspects, and the physical, implementation and migration extensions. Relationships are where most marks are lost: structural relationships such as composition, aggregation, assignment and realisation, dependency relationships such as serving, access, influence and association, dynamic relationships such as triggering and flow, plus specialisation, junctions, and the derivation rules that decide whether a relationship can exist between two elements.

The rest is layer-by-layer content: business actors, roles, processes, functions and services; application components, interfaces and services; technology nodes, devices, system software and networks; the motivation elements from stakeholder and driver through goal, outcome, principle and requirement; and the strategy elements of resource, capability, value stream and course of action. Several questions show a diagram fragment and ask what is wrong with it, so it pays to practise drawing the notation, not just reading about it.

About the exam

OGA-031 (ArchiMate 3 Part 1 Exam) earns the ArchiMate 3 Foundation certification from The Open Group and counts towards ArchiMate 3 Practitioner. It covers the ArchiMate language structure, generic metamodel, relationships, the Business, Application and Technology layers, motivation and strategy elements, and the physical, implementation and migration elements. There are no prerequisites.
