Three of the 253 questions in this pack

Question 1

What built-in Snowflake features make use of the change tracking metadata for a table? (Choose two.)

  1. The MERGE command
  2. The UPSERT command
  3. The CHANGES clause
  4. A STREAM object
  5. Thee CHANGE_DATA_CAPTURE command
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C, D

C. The CHANGES clause D. A STREAM object Snowflake's change tracking metadata is specifically designed to support the CHANGES clause in queries and STREAM objects. The CHANGES clause allows you to query the change tracking metadata directly to identify rows that have been inserted, updated, or deleted. STREAM objects leverage this same metadata to capture DML changes on a table, enabling incremental processing patterns. MERGE uses change detection but not the built-in change tracking metadata feature. UPSERT and CHANGE_DATA_CAPTURE are not standard Snowflake commands that utilize change tracking metadata.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. MERGE command does not directly use Snowflake's change tracking metadata system.
  • B. UPSERT is not a Snowflake command; MERGE is used for similar operations.
  • E. CHANGE_DATA_CAPTURE is not a native Snowflake command that uses change tracking metadata.

Question 2

When using the Snowflake Connector for Kafka, what data formats are supported for the messages? (Choose two.)

  1. CSV
  2. XML
  3. Avro
  4. JSON
  5. Parquet
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C, D

C. Avro D. JSON The Snowflake Connector for Kafka supports Avro and JSON as the primary data formats for incoming messages. These formats are explicitly documented as supported serialization formats because they provide schema information and are widely used in Kafka ecosystems. CSV, XML, and Parquet are not natively supported by the Kafka connector for message deserialization.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. CSV format is not supported by the Snowflake Connector for Kafka.
  • B. XML format is not supported by the Snowflake Connector for Kafka.
  • E. Parquet format is not supported by the Snowflake Connector for Kafka for message ingestion.

Question 3

At which object type level can the APPLY MASKING POLICY, APPLY ROW ACCESS POLICY and APPLY SESSION POLICY privileges be granted?

  1. Global
  2. Database
  3. Schema
  4. Table
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Global

The APPLY MASKING POLICY, APPLY ROW ACCESS POLICY, and APPLY SESSION POLICY privileges can only be granted at the global (account) level in Snowflake. These are account-level privileges that control the ability to apply policies to objects throughout the entire Snowflake account. They cannot be scoped to individual databases, schemas, or tables.

Why the other options are wrong

  • B. Database level does not support granting these policy application privileges.
  • C. Schema level does not support granting these policy application privileges.
  • D. Table level does not support granting these policy application privileges; policies are applied via global privileges.

What makes the ARA-C01 hard

ARA-C01 is the design exam in the SnowPro Advanced track and the one with the most expensive mistakes attached to it: 65 questions in 115 minutes, a scaled pass mark of 750 and a US$375 fee, with an active SnowPro Core required before you can book. Where Core asks what a feature does, Architect asks which combination of features you would choose for an enterprise with several accounts, regions, clouds and compliance regimes, and why the alternatives fall short.

Snowflake Architecture is the largest domain at around 30%: multi-account and multi-region design with organisations, database and account replication, failover groups and business continuity, cross-cloud considerations, Snowgrid, external and Iceberg tables, data lake patterns and choosing between virtual warehouse configurations for mixed workloads. Accounts and Security at around 25% covers the RBAC hierarchy at enterprise scale, custom role design, network policies and private connectivity, authentication with SSO, key pair and OAuth, encryption and Tri-Secret Secure, data governance with masking, row access policies, tags and object tagging, and the account usage views used to audit all of it.

Data Engineering at around 25% covers ingestion architectures with Snowpipe, streams and tasks, change data capture, Snowpark, external functions, data sharing and marketplace design and semi-structured data at scale. Performance Optimization at around 20% covers clustering, search optimisation, materialised tables, warehouse sizing and scaling strategy, query acceleration, caching and cost control. Most questions describe a requirement and four architectures that would all work; the exam wants the one that meets the requirement at the lowest cost or operational burden.

About the exam

ARA-C01 (SnowPro Advanced: Architect Certification) validates the ability to design enterprise Snowflake solutions: architecture across accounts, regions and clouds, accounts and security, data engineering patterns, and performance optimisation. Prerequisite: an active SnowPro Core certification. Snowflake recommends two or more years of hands-on Snowflake architecture experience.

Exam domains

  • Accounts and Security: approximately 25%
  • Snowflake Architecture: approximately 30%
  • Data Engineering: approximately 25%
  • Performance Optimization: approximately 20%

Snowflake publishes these weightings as ranges in the exam study guide. 65 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, 115 minutes, passing score 750 on a 0 to 1000 scale, US$375 per attempt, taken at a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctored, certification valid for two years.
