What the Microsoft DP-700 is and who it is for

The DP-700, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, is the exam behind the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate certification. Microsoft aims it at data engineers with subject matter expertise in data loading patterns, data architectures and orchestration processes.

The role has three parts: ingesting and transforming data, securing and managing an analytics solution, and monitoring and optimising it. You work with analytics engineers, architects, analysts and administrators to design and deploy data engineering solutions in Fabric. Microsoft expects you to manipulate and transform data with three languages: SQL, PySpark and KQL (Kusto Query Language). In practice the exam is about pipelines, notebooks, streaming and keeping the platform running.

Microsoft set 19 October 2026 as the date of an update to the English version of the exam, and the study guide lists the skills measured as of that date. The change log marks two minor changes, in Configure Microsoft Fabric workspace settings and in Optimize performance, and no change to the audience profile. Localised versions are normally updated about eight weeks after the English one.

Microsoft does not publish a question count for the DP-700. It says most of its certification exams typically contain between 40 and 60 questions, but that the number varies by exam, so pace yourself against the 100 minutes.

What is on the exam

The three domains carry the same weight, 30 to 35% each, so there is no safe area to skip.

Implement and manage an analytics solution (30 to 35%). Workspace settings for Fabric, Spark, domains, OneLake and Apache Airflow. Lifecycle management with version control, database projects and deployment pipelines. Security and governance: workspace and item access, row-level, column-level, object-level and folder or file-level access, dynamic data masking, sensitivity labels, endorsement, Fabric audit logs and OneLake security. It ends with orchestration: choosing between a Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline and a notebook, schedules and event-based triggers, and orchestration patterns with parameters and dynamic expressions.

Ingest and transform data (30 to 35%). Full and incremental loads, preparing data for a dimensional model and loading patterns for streaming data. For batch work you choose a data store, choose between Dataflows Gen2, notebooks, KQL and T-SQL, create OneLake shortcuts, implement mirroring, ingest with pipelines and transform with PySpark, SQL and KQL, including duplicate, missing and late-arriving data. For streaming you choose an engine, choose between native tables and shortcuts in Real-Time Intelligence, and process data with Eventstream, Spark structured streaming and KQL, including windowing functions.

Monitor and optimize an analytics solution (30 to 35%). Monitoring ingestion, transformation and semantic model refresh, and configuring alerts. Then finding and fixing errors in pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, notebooks, Eventhouse, Eventstream, T-SQL and OneLake shortcuts. The last part is performance: lakehouse tables, pipelines, the data warehouse, Eventstream and Eventhouse, Spark and query performance.

Why people fail it

Several DP-700 objectives begin with a choice. Dataflow Gen2, pipeline or notebook. Dataflows, notebooks, KQL or T-SQL. A native table or a shortcut. Eventstream, Spark structured streaming or KQL. Candidates who know one Fabric workload well tend to answer every scenario with the tool they use daily, and the exam is built to catch that.

The second cause is the even weighting. A third of the exam is monitoring, troubleshooting and optimisation. Many candidates prepare to build pipelines but not to read why one failed, or how to optimise a lakehouse table, a warehouse or a Spark job. Those questions need hands-on time, not reading.

The third is language switching. You need to read and write SQL, PySpark and KQL well enough to spot the correct statement among close options. A weak language costs marks wherever the exam asks you to transform data or fix errors.

A study plan that fits the exam

Six weeks suits most people who already build data solutions. With three equal domains, each gets about a week and a half, and the last week is timed practice.

  1. Week 1: workspace settings and lifecycle. Configure Fabric, Spark, OneLake and Airflow workspace settings, connect a workspace to Git, try a database project and set up a deployment pipeline. Take the free DP-700 practice questions to find your gaps.
  2. Week 2: security and orchestration. Access controls at every level, dynamic data masking, sensitivity labels, audit logs and OneLake security. Then build the same job as a Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline and a notebook, with schedules, triggers and parameters.
  3. Week 3: batch loading. Full and incremental loads, a dimensional model, shortcuts, mirroring, and transformations in PySpark, SQL and KQL, including late-arriving data.
  4. Week 4: streaming. Eventstream, Spark structured streaming and KQL, native tables against shortcuts in Real-Time Intelligence, and windowing functions.
  5. Week 5: monitoring and optimisation. Break things on purpose and fix them: pipeline, notebook, Dataflow Gen2, Eventstream, T-SQL and shortcut errors. Then optimise a lakehouse table, a warehouse and a Spark job.
  6. Week 6: timed runs. Take Microsoft's free Practice Assessment, then work through the questions-only copy in the DP-700 practice question pack in 100 minute blocks and read the explanation for every miss.

On exam day

You schedule through Pearson VUE. You can sit online from home or an office, proctored by webcam and microphone, or at a test centre. Microsoft says the online launch and check-in process takes about 15 minutes, and it suggests a personal computer rather than a work one. It also recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account, because exam records tied to a work or school account are lost if you leave that organisation.

You get 100 minutes, and Microsoft suggests allowing 120 minutes of seat time. Five minutes of break time is built into the exam, but the clock keeps running during a break and you cannot return to questions you saw before it. You can open Microsoft Learn in a split screen during the exam, but the timer keeps running, so use it for one detail, not every question.

If the exam is not offered in your preferred language, you can request an extra 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I fail the DP-700?

You can retake it after 24 hours. After that, Microsoft requires 14 days between attempts, with no more than five attempts in the 12 months from your first. You must pay to retake the exam, so it is worth being ready the first time.

How do I keep the certification?

It lasts 12 months. You renew for free by passing a short, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month window before it expires. Passing extends it by one year from the expiry date.

Is the practice pack enough on its own?

No. It is practice, not a course. The 161 questions show how Microsoft frames tool choices and troubleshooting scenarios and explain why the wrong options are wrong, but the DP-700 rewards time spent building and fixing things in Fabric. Use Microsoft's self-paced learning paths and your own Fabric workspace to build the skills, then use the questions to test yourself under time.

When you are ready to test yourself properly, get the DP-700 practice questions with full explanations.
