What makes the PL-400 hard
PL-400 sits in the awkward gap between low-code and pro-code, and it tests both sides hard, which is exactly why makers and .NET developers each fail it from their own direction.
The pro-code half is Dataverse internals: plug-in stages and execution pipeline, when a plug-in beats a Power Automate flow, the Web API versus the organisation service, and PCF component development. The low-code half expects fluent decisions between canvas and model-driven patterns, business rules versus classic workflows versus flows, and solution layering: managed versus unmanaged, and what actually happens on import.
One domain dominates: Extend the platform is 30 to 35% of the exam, while the other five domains sit at 10 to 15% each. Makers who have never written a plug-in tend to lose the exam in that single domain.
With PL-500 and PL-600 retired, PL-400 is the last developer-grade Power Platform credential standing.
