What the AWS SAP-C02 is and who it is for
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Professional (SAP-C02) is AWS’s most advanced architecture certification. It validates that you can design complex, optimised and scalable solutions across the full AWS service catalogue, and it covers organisational complexity, multi-account environments, migration and modernisation, and the continuous improvement of architectures that already exist. AWS recommends two or more years of hands on experience. There are no formal prerequisites, but most candidates hold the Solutions Architect Associate first.
It is for you if you already design on AWS and want the credential that proves you can do it at scale: across many accounts, for large migrations, and under the cost, security and reliability constraints that real organisations impose.
Check your dates before anything else. AWS is updating this exam. Registration for SAP-C03 opens on 27 October 2026, and the last day to take SAP-C02 is 17 November 2026. This guide is for candidates who will sit SAP-C02 before that date.

What is on the exam
Four domains, weighted fairly evenly. No single domain is small enough to skip, and the largest two together are 55% of the exam.
Design solutions for organizational complexity (26%). Architecture for organisations with many accounts, teams and business units. Think cross-account network connectivity, hybrid links back to on premises data centres, centralised security and governance controls, identity across accounts, and cost visibility for the business.
Design for new solutions (29%). The largest domain. You are given business requirements and asked to design something new that meets them: the right compute, storage, database and integration choices, a deployment strategy, and a design that hits its targets for reliability, performance, security and cost at the same time. Most wrong options here work, but break one stated requirement.
Continuous improvement for existing solutions (25%). An architecture already exists and something about it is not good enough. You decide how to make it more reliable, faster, cheaper, more secure or easier to operate, usually with the least disruption.
Accelerate workload migration and modernization (20%). Choosing which workloads to move and how, planning the migration itself, selecting the target architecture, and deciding where to modernise, for example by moving from servers to managed or serverless services. Expect questions about sequencing and about the trade-off between speed and change.
Why people fail it
SAP-C02 is AWS’s hardest architecture exam, and it does not test what you do day to day. A single question can pull in compute, storage, networking, databases, security, migration, analytics and application integration at once, and you have to hold all of them in your head while you compare several long options. An architect who knows a handful of service areas deeply, because that is what their job uses, meets questions built on the areas they never touch.
Years of AWS experience are not a guarantee of a pass. What matters is whether you have seen how the exam structures its scenarios: a long paragraph of requirements, several of which quietly rule options out. Phrases about the lowest operational overhead, the least cost or the fastest migration are not decoration. They are the whole question. Candidates who read for the technical problem and skim the constraint pick an answer that works but is not the one being marked.
Stamina is the third trap. 75 questions in 180 minutes sounds generous until you meet scenario after scenario of dense text. Candidates who have never done a full sitting under a clock slow down in the second half, exactly where careful reading still matters.
A study plan that fits the exam
Six weeks, which fits before the 17 November 2026 cut off if you start now. The weights are close together, so each domain gets real time, with the largest getting the most.
- Week 1: organisational complexity. Multi-account structure, cross-account networking, hybrid connectivity, and centralised security and cost controls. Try the free SAP-C02 practice questions at the end of the week to see how long and layered the scenarios are.
- Week 2: new solutions, part one. Compute, storage and database selection against stated requirements, plus deployment strategies. Start working the matching questions in the SAP-C02 practice question pack and read every explanation, including why each wrong option is wrong.
- Week 3: new solutions, part two. Designing for reliability, performance, security and cost together. Practise underlining the constraint in each question before you look at the options.
- Week 4: continuous improvement. Taking an existing design and improving one property without breaking the others. Mix in a set of organisational complexity questions to keep week 1 fresh.
- Week 5: migration and modernisation. Migration planning, target architectures and modernisation choices. End with a mixed set across all four domains.
- Week 6: timed runs. Use the questions only PDF for full sittings against the 180 minute limit, score each run by domain, and spend the remaining days on whichever domain came out lowest.
On exam day
You sit SAP-C02 at a Pearson VUE testing centre or online with a proctor. For online delivery, check the room and computer requirements on the AWS page ahead of time and run the system test on the machine you will use.
You have 180 minutes for 75 questions. Set checkpoints before you start so you know roughly where you should be at the halfway point. On each question, read the last sentence first to find what is being asked, then read the scenario looking for the constraint. If two options still look right, flag it, pick one and move on rather than burning time you need later. The passing score is 750 out of 1000 on a scaled score, so do not try to count marks as you go. Answer every question.
Frequently asked questions
When can I last take SAP-C02?
The last day to take SAP-C02 is 17 November 2026, and registration for the replacement, SAP-C03, opens on 27 October 2026. If you cannot sit before 17 November, study for SAP-C03 instead, because a pack or course built for SAP-C02 will not match the new exam exactly.
What happens if I fail? Can I retake it?
You can, but a failed attempt costs the full US$300 again, with no retake discount. AWS publishes its retake rules, including any waiting period, on its certification pages, so read them before you book. With the SAP-C02 cut off date so close, a waiting period could leave no room for a second attempt, which is another reason to do your timed practice before the first one.
Is the practice question pack enough on its own?
No. The pack is 529 practice questions across all four domains, with the correct answer, the reasoning and a note on every wrong option, plus a questions only PDF for timed runs. It shows you how the exam frames its scenarios and exposes the service areas you are weak on. It is not a course, and it will not teach a service you have never used. Pair it with the AWS documentation, whitepapers and real hands on time in an account.
Do I need the Solutions Architect Associate first?
There are no formal prerequisites, so you can book SAP-C02 directly. Most candidates do hold the associate certification first, and AWS recommends two or more years of hands on experience.
